The venue, which has previously been described as a “quintessential British pub”, has been at the heart of the idyllic village for over 230 years
Tucked away on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, a historic Lancashire pub has revealed when it will reopen to visitors. The Windmill in Parbold is looking forward to welcoming back customers later this month.
The venue, which has previously been described as a “quintessential British pub”, has been at the heart of the idyllic village for over 230 years. It is located to the east of Ormskirk in West Lancashire.
Now, its new owners have said the pub will reopen its doors on Thursday, 27 February following a two-month renovation.
Manager Ed Nikaj, who has been at the venue for 12 years, is looking forward to reopening the doors soon. He said: “The Windmill is proud of its place at the heart of our community, and we can’t wait to welcome people back and see what they think.
“The pub has undergone a substantial renovation over the past two months which will really elevate the experience for our customers.
“The interest in what’s happening has been huge. People I have spoken to are so excited to see the new look.
“Everything that has made The Windmill so loved for so many years has been retained, including staff members, favourite dishes, the essence of what we are, as well as restoring some of the heritage features in the pub.
“We are looking forward to seeing everyone return.”
The Windmill team has been working hard to bring guests something special for the relaunch including some well-loved familiar faces, menu favourites plus some new additions.
Improvements include the new breakfast menu which is available for the first time, and will be served from 9am onwards.
Customers have also been told to keep an eye out for a selection of new afternoon teas, bottomless brunches and more, which will be coming soon.
Situated on the canal, The Windmill is popular with dog walkers, anglers and visitors to the area, with roaring log fires to help customers escape the cold.
It is located just a short walk away from Parbold Hill, which has stunning views across the Pennines.
The Windmill Hotel opened in 1794, and the pub’s construction was timed to take advantage of the opening of the early sections of the Leeds to Liverpool canal, as well as to service thirsty farmers depositing their grain at the neighbouring windmill.
Villagers seeking the conviviality of great ale, superb food, flowing conversation and a roaring fire made up the numbers and not a lot has changed since.
Mikhail Hotel And Leisure Group has vowed to make The Windmill “a very special place” after acquiring the venue last year.
Despite some concerns about the pub’s extension plans on the village – including a single-storey rear extension and a new timber fence on its southern boundary to replace an existing seating area – The Windmill has secured planning permission and the new extension and new-look pub should be completed by the end of May.
Reservations at The Windmill from 27 February 2025 onwards are now open.
The pub can be found at 3 Mill Lane, Parbold, Wigan WN8 7NW.
