BREAKING: OpenAI is getting into Autonomous Cars, Drones, Humanoid, wheeled and soft robots – techAU
This afternoon, OpenAI have effectively announced a major change in the direction of their business – they are getting into hardware, specifically robotics.
OpenAI are the creators of LLM ChatGPT, Sora and Dall-E and from this announcement, it seems they’re just getting started. With large investments into training compute (in collaboration with Microsoft), OpenAI continue to improve their large language models and while search and chat, text to image and text to video services are fun, implementing an LLM in the physical world is a massive opportunity.
Member of Technical Staff at OpenAI, Caitlin Kalinowski (@kalinowski007) shared their first 2 Robotics hardware job roles.
The first role is for an **EE Sensing Engineer** to help us design the sensor suite for our robots.
There are 3 roles being advertised, with the compensation ranging from $360K to $440K and includes Equity in OpenAI.
EE Sensing Engineer
The first role is for an **EE Sensing Engineer** to help us design the sensor suite for our robots.
Robotics Mechanical Design Engineer
The second role is for a **Robotics Mechanical Design Engineer** with experience designing gears, actuators, motors and linkages for robots.
TPM Manager
The last role is for a **TPM Manager**. This will be a fun, scrappy role to start and will span Product TPM work, standing up our training lab, and keeping us running smoothly as we cycle through our product design phases.
He went on to share a critical definition of what they mean by ‘robotics’.. it’s broad, really broad.
For OpenAI, Robotics is going to include the umbrella of Autonomous Cars, Drones, Humanoid, wheeled and soft robots.
