With Measles cases rising, Windsor Regional Hospital tightens visitor policy

Article content
As measles cases continue to climb in southwestern Ontario, Windsor Regional Hospital on Thursday announced it will tighten visitor guidelines to reduce the risk of infection.
The restrictions apply to all visitors aged 16 and under and will stay in effect until further notice.
As of Thursday, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) had confirmed three local cases of measles, while Chatham-Kent’s health unit reported at least seven cases.

These local cases contribute to a spike across the province, which public health officials are calling the most severe measles outbreak in three decades.
To prevent transmission of the highly-contagious respiratory virus, Windsor Regional Hospital is asking anyone with an upcoming appointment who may have been exposed to measles in the past three weeks, is unvaccinated, has symptoms, or has recently traveled outside Canada, to contact the hospital before their visit.
Symptoms can include a fever, runny nose, cough, drowsiness, irritability and red eyes. About seven to 18 days following exposure, a characteristic red rash begins, usually on the face and upper neck, before spreading to the hands and feet, and sometimes body. The rash typically lasts five to six days before fading.
Two doses of the measles vaccine is the most effective way to prevent the virus, according to the local health unit.
For those requiring emergency medical attention who believe they were exposed to measles in the past three weeks, Windsor Regional Hospital is requesting patients call ahead and wear a well-fitted mask upon entry.
